Ronald Reagan was an American politician and actor who served as the 40th President of the United States from 1981 to 1989. He was born on February 6, 1911, in Tampico, Illinois, to parents John "Jack" Reagan and Nelle Wilson Reagan. Reagan's family moved frequently throughout Illinois, living in Tampico, Chicago, Galesburg, Monmouth, and finally Dixon where the family eventually settled when Ronald was nine years old. Despite their near poverty and his father’s drinking problem, Reagan later recalled his childhood in Dixon as the happiest period of his life. Reagan attended high school in Dixon and then worked his way through Eureka College where he studied economics and sociology. After college, he decided to enter radio broadcasting and later worked in television and spoke for General Electric. Reagan's political career began when he served as the president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1947 to 1952. He then became a conservative spokesman for General Electric and entered politics as a Republican. In his first term as President, Reagan implemented "Reaganomics", which involved economic deregulation and cuts in both taxes and government spending during a period of stagflation. He also escalated an arms race and transitioned Cold War policy away from détente with the Soviet Union. At the end of his two terms in office, Ronald Reagan viewed with satisfaction the achievements of his innovative program known as the Reagan Revolution, which aimed to reinvigorate the American people and reduce their reliance upon Government.
