Nikola Tesla was born in 1856 in a mountainous area of the Balkan Peninsula known as Lika, which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, region of Croatia. His father Milutin was a stern but loving Orthodox priest, who was also a gifted writer and poet. Tesla's mother Djuka was a hardworking woman of many talents who created appliances to help with home and farm responsibilities. Tesla began his education at home and later attended gymnasium in Carlstadt, Croatia excelling in his studies along the way. An early sign of his genius, he was able to perform integral calculus in his mind, prompting his teachers to think he was cheating. Tesla immigrated to the United States in 1884 and briefly worked with Thomas Edison before the two parted ways. He sold several patent rights, including those to his AC machinery, to George Westinghouse. Tesla's work then shifted to turbines and other projects. Because of a lack of funds, his ideas remained in his notebooks, which are still examined by enthusiasts for unexploited clues. Tesla was an inventor and demonstrated his achievements to celebrities and wealthy patrons at his lab, and was noted for his showmanship at public lectures. Throughout the 1890s, Tesla pursued his ideas for wireless lighting and worldwide wireless electric power distribution in his high-voltage, high-frequency ... creative abilities to his mother's genetics and influence. Tesla's ancestors were from western Serbia, near Montenegro. Tesla had three sisters, Milka, Angelina, and Marica, and an older brother named Dane, who was killed in a horse riding accident when Tesla was aged five. Tesla wrote many autobiographical articles for the prominent journal Electrical Experimenter, collected in the book My Inventions. He was gifted with intense powers of visualization and exceptional memory from early youth on. He was able to fully construct, develop and perfect his inventions completely in his mind.
