Andrew Grove was a Hungarian-American businessman and engineer who was born on September 2, 1936, in Budapest, Hungary. He was born into a middle-class Jewish family and survived both the Nazi and communist regimes in Hungary. His father owned a small dairy business, and his mother helped keep the books. As a child, Grove was afflicted with scarlet fever and an ear infection that left him almost deaf. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the City College of New York in 1960 and graduated with his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1963. After completing his Ph.D., Grove worked at Fairchild Semiconductor as a researcher, and by 1967 had become its assistant director of development. He later became assistant head of research and development under Gordon E. Moore. When Moore and Robert Noyce founded Intel, they brought Grove along. Grove was credited with being the driving force behind the enormous success of semiconductor computer circuit manufacturer Intel. In 1997, he was named Time magazine’s “Man of the Year” . He wrote an autobiography, Swimming Across (2001), and books about business management, including One-on-One with Andy Grove: How to Manage Your Boss, Yourself.
