Sarah Josepha Hale Books in Order (14 Books)

Sarah Josepha Hale was an American writer, poet, and editor who was born on October 24th, 1788, in Newport, New Hampshire. Her parents were strong advocates for education of both sexes, and Hale was taught well beyond the normal age for a woman. She married a lawyer David Hale, who supported her in all scholarly endeavors. After her husband's death, she turned to poetry as a form of income. Hale is best known for creating the nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb," but her work extends far beyond her writing. She was the first female editor of a magazine and shaped many of the attitudes and thoughts of women of her period. As editor, Hale wrote most of the material for each issue herself, including literary criticism, sketches of American life, essays, and poetry. She supported patriotic and humanitarian organizations, advocated education for women, and opportunities for women to teach, although she always remained apart from formal feminist movements. Hale has been criticized heavily for her support of gender roles, as she encouraged women to focus their efforts in the domestic realm. She died on April 30, 1879, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the age of 90.
