Born on September 3, 1963 in Fareham, Hampshire, England, his mother, Joyce, was a psychotherapist of Jamaican descent, and his father, Graham, was a math professor from Kent, England. The family moved to Elmira, Canada from Southampton when Malcolm was six years old, and it was here that he developed an interest in libraries and reading, having spent much of his early life in a rural area. He has credited his mother as his role model when it comes to writing. Malcolm is a Christian, and his family attended church when they lived in the UK and Canada. They belonged to the Mennonite community in Ontario.
